Senior Brandon Deaderick, the expected starter for the Crimson Tide at right defensive end was shot in his apartment in Tuscaloosa, according to the Press Register. Apparently Deaderick was the victim of a home invasion and was shot upon refusing to turn over whatever the invader demanded. Fortunately, the wound(s) are not life-threatening and Deaderick should be able to recover just fine. My thoughts are with Brandon in his family today. Over the last two years, I have learned how it feels to have not only a classmate affected by guns, a la 4/16. On top of that, Hokie fans similar scare (luckily he wasn't injured) with Macho Harris a few years back. Being a die-hard Redskins fan, I'm still in disbelief over the loss of their star safety Sean Taylor, who was killed under similar circumstances. Deaderick is extremely fortunate to be alive, and I will keep him in my thoughts.
With regards to football, Deaderick is a pretty significant loss for the Tide. Brandon started all 14 games for ‘Bama in 2008, finishing with 33 tackles, 4 sacks, and 5.5 tackles for loss. According to their two-deep, which was released yesterday, Luther Davis should be called up as his replacement in the lineup. Davis was an ESPN Top 150 recruit and currently has 15 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss in his two years of spot duty. He has big shoes to fill, but has the talent to do so. For the sake of ‘Bama fans, I hope he fills in well. We want a shot to beat you at full strength, and if you’re going to be down a man, we certainly wish that it wasn’t under these circumstances.
